Background

Scratch72 is an online golf clothing and accessories shop. The shop sells a wide range of menswear and golf equipment, from base layers, polos and waterproofs through to bags, gloves, balls and rangefinders. Before working with Serenity, Scratch72 sold primarily through eBay, alongside a WordPress site that had been built in early 2019.

The challenge

Scratch72 had been selling through eBay for years and still does, but wanted a website of their own to sell through as well. A WordPress site built in 2019 wasn't up to the job. It didn't work properly with StoreFeeder, the software Scratch72 depended on to manage inventory across channels, which meant product content and images had to be duplicated by hand across eBay and the website. Worse, stock levels weren't updating accurately, creating a real risk of overselling.

Scratch72 needed a bespoke website that would integrate properly with StoreFeeder, so that products could be managed centrally and stock levels stayed accurate. When they got in touch, we took over hosting of the existing WordPress site immediately, while we put together a proposal for the rebuild.

Our approach

Phase 1

Website design and build

The site needed rebuilding from the ground up to work properly with StoreFeeder. We kicked things off with a demonstration of Serenity Source, showing how rebuilding the site on our own CMS would allow StoreFeeder to integrate cleanly, resolving the stock control problems and giving Scratch72 a central place to manage product content.

The existing design also needed attention. Our design team gave it more breathing room, adding white space and simplifying the navigation to make the site easier to use, particularly on mobile. Improving product search and filtering was another key part of the brief, making it quicker for customers to find what they were after.

Phase 2

Solving the StoreFeeder data problem

Partway through the build, we hit a snag.

When connecting Source to StoreFeeder, it became clear that the data feed didn't include the metadata needed to link product images to the correct colour variants. Rather than work around it, our developers built a new module within Source specifically to solve this, allowing images to be matched to the right colour variant for every product.

Phase 3

Driving targeted traffic to the website

Once the new website was live, Scratch72 were ready to start driving targeted traffic to it. Over the following years, we supported the team with Google Ads, Meta Ads and content marketing, before they eventually brought this in-house to manage themselves. During peak seasons, our paid advertising work returned as much as £14.16 for every £1 spent.

Our content strategy was built around reaching different audiences across the platforms that mattered most to them. On social media, we created, scheduled and reported on posts, keeping the brand visible and consistent. Email marketing let us reach subscribers directly, helping turn interest into sales. And a steady stream of new articles and blog posts kept organic search traffic on an upward trajectory.

The Results

Scratch72 were pleased with the finished website and the service behind it. The new site was well designed, attractive and straightforward to navigate. The StoreFeeder integration saved hours that had previously gone into loading products manually. Site administration became easier, giving Scratch72 more creative control, and the mobile-optimised design made it simpler for customers to browse and buy on any device. The site itself was noticeably faster too.

The conclusion

What Scratch72 got out of this went well beyond a new-looking website. Turnover was up 335% in the first seven months after launch, and that momentum didn't fade, orders and revenue both grew by well over 500% between 2020 and 2023. Behind those numbers was a business finally freed from the manual, duplicated work that had been quietly holding it back, giving the team more time to focus on running the business instead of fighting their own systems.
