Growth is often mistaken as a marketing challenge. More often than not, the challenge is actually an operational one.

When leads aren't coming in consistently, the Return On Investment (ROI) isn't clear and the team is stretched, the default answer is often: spend more on advertising. But when the systems underneath are inefficient, i.e. when data is duplicated, manually forwarded, or siloed between departments; no amount of ad spend will fix what's broken at an operational level. This is a pattern we see again and again, but it's our unique approach to understanding businesses on an operational level that can accelerate real growth in a company.

This blog uncovers exactly how our approach to consultancy can bring operational efficiency and commercial growth to businesses in two connected stages that pay for themselves, and examples of how we have achieved it for our clients.

How is serenity's approach to consultancy unique and how does it work?

The way we approach working with businesses often results in an organically self-financing model for growth and works in two connected stages. This approach can be applied to any industry - let's show you how.

Stage one is structural. We look at how your business actually operates, your data flows, your systems, the manual processes your team is working around every day. We design and build the infrastructure that removes that friction. CRM integrations, marketing automation, centralised first-party data, custom reporting dashboards and secure data architecture. This is the kind of backend work that creative and development 'agencies' don’t engage with, even though it can save businesses thousands of hours a year; and it’s a key differentiator for our Communications Consultancy.

Stage two is growth. With the right foundations in place, every pound spent on marketing works harder. Conversion rate optimisation, paid advertising, Search Engine Optimisation, content marketing and email marketing, are channels that will compound organically when they're connected to systems that actually function. For example, leads are captured cleanly, data flows where it needs to go, and your team is free to focus on work that moves the business forward.

The model pays for itself: The time and cost savings unlocked in stage one go on to help fund stage two. The efficiency gains are real and measurable and the growth that follows, delivers ROI that compounds the model further. It pays for itself.

Here's what that looks like in practice.

Case Study 1: Hundreds of admin hours eliminated

Client: Main Developer & Investment Group for new town in Hampshire
Industry:
Construction & Property
Location: Hampshire, UK

Background
Our client approached us with a problem that will be familiar to many growing businesses. Every time a prospective buyer submitted a form on their website, someone on the team had to manually forward that data to multiple recipients including internal teams, Mailchimp, and three separate property contractor's sales platforms. It worked, just barely. But it wasn't scalable. During periods of high submission volume, the risk of delays, errors and staff frustration grew with every submission.

The knock-on effects were significant. Partner developers' sales talent received lead data too slowly. Left alone, staff would spend hours each week on repetitive, low-value data handling. And the whole process depended entirely on people remembering to do it correctly, every time.

Our approach
Before anything was built, we mapped the full data journey from the moment someone submitted a form on their website, to every point where that data needed to migrate to. Three integration points emerged: Squarespace (the off-the-shelf CMS platform they chose), Mailchimp, and two property developer platforms running on COINS software.

From here, we designed a Zapier-led automation connecting all of them. Conditional logic was built in to respect marketing opt-out preferences before any data reached Mailchimp. We worked directly with each property developer's software team to define and test XML formatting requirements before anything went live. Nothing was guesswork.

The results

  • Over 4,100 automations successfully processed since February 2025
  • Approximately 340 hours of admin eliminated (based on a conservative five minute estimate per submission)
  • Every submission handled consistently, without intervention
  • Lead data reaching property developer sales teams automatically, without delay
  • Zero reliance on manual data entry or email forwarding

The time saved by our team and the new found confidence in lead automation allowed them to then focus ramping up marketing efforts and spend to further build on their efficient pipeline process.

This is what structural work looks like when it's done properly. The business is more efficient, the sales pipeline is faster, and the team's time has been returned to them.

Case Study 2: six years, one partner, compounding results

Client: Electrical Wholesaler to trade and retail
Industry:
Ecommerce & Retail
Location: Hampshire, UK

Background
When we first started working with our client, they had a functional website running on an ageing Zen Cart platform, owners who sought faster growth and site traffic that was expanding faster than its digital infrastructure could support. The challenge wasn't just technical, it was about aligning a strong, established business with a platform and marketing strategy that could scale without a ceiling.

Our approach
The relationship has evolved across four phases - each one earned through the results of the last.

Phase one: stabilise and support.
We were initially charged with the maintenance of the existing website - resolving issues, keeping things running reliably. We didn't immediately recommend significant change; we took the time to understand the business, its customers, and where the real bottlenecks were.

Phase two: platform rebuild.
When it became clear that further growth required a more capable foundation, we made the case for a full migration. In 2023/24, we launched a new ecommerce website built in Serenity Source CMS with our powerful ecommerce engine extension hooked up. Since launch, we've made continuous improvements - each one targeted at growth, operational efficiency, or commercial value.

Key developments include:

  • Zero card processing fees through the integration of a new payment provider
  • Reduced customer service queries, with clearer delivery time communication throughout the order journey
  • More flexible purchasing options, including credit and pay-in-3 methods
  • Reduced lost sales with backordering and discontinued product functionality
  • Live stock visibility through API integrations with key suppliers
  • Automatic re-engagement with back-in-stock email notifications

Phase three: search and visibility.
With the new platform established and bringing in measurable ecommerce ROI, we took on search engine optimisation management and conversion rate optimisation to further expand the audience and improve sales. We started with a thorough learning phase by understanding the site's products and how its customers, both trade and retail, actually search. Individual product optimisation, cross-selling opportunities, internal linking, heatmapping, and a backlink strategy all followed.

Phase four: paid advertising.
Having built trust through measurable SEO results and now confident in our conversion optimisation, we extended the partnership to include paid advertising across Google and Microsoft. We took over the campaigns from a marketing agency who were otherwise automating most of the strategy, and restructured accordingly.

The results:
PPC performance (June 2025 – April 2026):

  • On Google Ads:
    • +38.75% increase in conversions
    • +25.25% increase in revenue
    • +33.86% conversion rate
  • On Microsoft Ads:
    • +137.99% increase in conversions
    • +108.71% increase in revenue
    • +270.77% increase in Return On Ad Spend (ROAS)

The platform rebuild and conversion rate optimisation removed the ceiling on what the business could achieve commercially. With a stable, scalable foundation in place, growth marketing had something solid to build on and the results compounded accordingly. What started as a maintenance contract has become one of our longest-standing partnerships, because each step earned the right to proceed to the next and paid for itself.

What these two businesses have in common

Different industries, starting points and challenges but the same underlying pattern.
Structural work must come first; understanding the systems, the data, the inefficiencies, the hours being lost. Growth work then follows, built on foundations that can actually support it. And because the two stages are connected, the results compound.

It's not a product or a package, it's simply the way we like to work. And for businesses with genuine growth ambitions, it's the difference between marketing that feels like a cost and communications with systems design that functions as an investment.

If you'd like to understand what this could look like for your business, we'd be glad to start that conversation.
