Instagram’s update is live and changing how people find you
Instagram now lets Google and other search engines show posts from public business and creator accounts. Your photos, Reels and videos can show up in Google searches, meaning that people who don’t follow you - or even use Instagram - can now discover your brand.
Who this affects
This update is for public business and creator accounts, and you need to be 18 or over. Only public posts, Reels and videos are included.
Private accounts, personal profiles, and users under 18 aren’t affected. If your account is private or personal, your posts will remain hidden from search engines.
Why this matters for your business
This change means that your Instagram content isn’t just for your followers. Now, when someone searches on Google, your posts can show up in the results, even if the searcher has never viewed your Instagram before. This opens the door for new people to find you, follow you, and become customers.
Social media and SEO are now linked
Instagram showing up in Google searches is part of a bigger shift, with social media and SEO now working hand-in-hand. Just like Pinterest and YouTube, Instagram is now a real player in search results.
What does this mean for your strategy?
-
Social media optimisation is now a key part of SEO.
-
Consistent messaging and keywords across your platforms can help you get noticed.
-
Making your Instagram posts search-friendly will help you reach new audiences, raise awareness of your brand, and lead more people to your business.
How this boosts your reach
As your Instagram posts can now appear in Google Images, it’s easier for people to find your visuals. If you use clear captions, smart hashtags and good alt text, your posts can show up in relevant searches. In other words, your Instagram profile is now a bigger part of your SEO plan.
What you can do right now
With Google indexing Instagram, your public posts matter more. Treat each post like a mini landing page for your brand:
-
Write clear, keyword-rich captions.
-
Use hashtags that fit your content and audience.
-
Add descriptive alt text to images.
-
Include calls to action that invite people to engage or visit your website.
-
Create evergreen content - posts that stay relevant over time.
-
Review your old posts and update or archive anything that’s outdated or off-brand.
By doing this, your Instagram feed becomes a collection of posts that can help people find you through search.
Potential risks to watch out for
Opening up your Instagram to Google brings new opportunities, but also some things to keep in mind:
-
Content can be misunderstood: Posts with inside jokes or niche references might not make sense to people outside your usual audience.
-
Old promotions might resurface: Expired offers or event posts can show up in search, which could confuse new customers.
-
Risk of SEO cannibalisation: Using the same keywords everywhere (website, blog, Instagram) can make your own posts compete against each other in search. Try to vary your keywords and keep your messaging coordinated.
How to stay in control
If you want to keep your Instagram posts out of search engines, you have options.
You can turn off external search in your account settings (Settings > Privacy > Search Engines). Or, you can switch to a personal profile, but you’ll lose business features such as analytics and scheduling.
Getting ready for Instagram’s new visibility
-
Archive posts that no longer fit your brand.
-
Update captions to be clear and timeless.
-
Remove inside jokes or references that might confuse new visitors.
-
Make sure your bio and highlights tell your brand’s story clearly.
