What do you wish you had been told?

We’ll soon be spending time working directly with students at a local College, providing them with some real-world insights into the world of business. I wonder what your thoughts are - what do you think new graduates and young entreprenuers lack when jumping into the world of business?

I’m sure we can all agree that Schools, Colleges and Universities all provide fantastic opportunities for academic study, provide excellent resources for knowledge and access to fantastic teachers, lecturers and mentors. However, changes to the education system for 16-19 years means there will be a re-focus on enterprise and entrepreneurialism - Something I must say, I wish I had access to at that age.

Over the next few months we’ll be working with Chichester College on Enterprise days, providing advice and feedback directly to students and judging contests - but where would/should our advice start?

I thought I’d ask you…

  • What advice would you give a college leaver who is seeking employment or positions in higher education?
  • How can they stand out?
  • What are the common pitfalls and mistakes made when applying for work and then when within the workplace?
  • What skills and competencies do you expect them to have?

We look forward to hearing your thoughts…
