WordPress Malware Attacks

Over the past week we have seen that more than 100,000 WordPress websites may have been infected with the SoakSoak malware with Google blacklisting 11,000 of these sites.

Having your website infected with malware could have potentially devastating consequences for an online business. Apart from the obvious effect of being blacklisted by search engines, websites can lose the trust of their visitors. This can have long-term repercussions, even when the problem has been fixed. Why would customers risk visiting a website with known security issues?

The root of this attack seems to be linked to older versions of a common WordPress slideshow plugin, Slider Revolution. This highlights the importance of regularly updating your software. Generally speaking, by keeping web software up to date with the latest secure technology you can prevent your website from being infected by the majority of web malware.

However in this case it was not easy for everyone to upgrade. As Daniel Cid from security firm Securi who first reported the problem said, some website owners didn’t even know they had the plugin installed as it had been packaged and bundled into their WordPress themes.
