Stu completes the Great South Run

So it's that time of the year again; time for Europe's premier 10 mile road race, the Bupa Great South Run! 2013 was my seventh consecutive year competing in the event however this year was different, this was the year I trained to be stronger and faster than ever before.

My training this year didn't actually consist of much running, I went for a few training runs leading up to the event, the furthest being an 8 mile run in September. My fitness this year comes from classes run by a company called Les Mills, they provide a whole range of classes for all fitness levels, with my personal favourite being their GRIT series.

Race day finally came around, I was both excited and nervous but was quietly confident I'd beat my best personal best of 01:31:18 that I attained in 2009. It was very windy this year, so much so some participants were concerned about their safety leading up to the event!

The race itself went as planned, I felt I breezed through the first 7 miles keeping my pace under 8 min/mile. The last 2-3 miles were where I got a little tired and the wind really picked up along the seafront from Eastney. Thankfully I was able to keep my pace under 9 min/mile to ensure I smashed my personal best!

My 2013 time was 01:21:17, which is a full 10 minutes off my previous personal best, something I'm very pleased with!

I wasn't going to enter the Great South Run in 2014 but I'm already thinking about breaking into the mid 70's next year!
